Valdosta High's Skills USA Chapter Attends Conference

SkillsUSA chapter advisor Wes Force (Graphic Communications), and Valdosta High School’s six SkillsUSA chapter officers, attended the SkillsUSA-Georgia Fall Leadership Conference held at the Jekyll Island Convention Center at Jekyll Island, Georgia, September 17-18. The officers are David Hutcherson, Jensine Williams, Skip Fedrick, Raheem Daniels, Heath Newbern, and Stephen Cavallaro.

Over one thousand SkillsUSA-Georgia-affiliated individuals came together to attend this event in order to promote this year’s national theme, SkillsUSA: Connecting the Opportunities. The theme was reinforced through the students’ participation in a variety of activities which stressed the importance of leadership abilities, professionalism, community service, and the aptitude to become a great champion in one’s chosen career pathway. 

The officers also took part in a mandatory Statesman Award Test which gave them an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of SkillsUSA. Five of the attending students received their Statesman Award. In addition, each officer participated in a different leadership session, allowing them to gain insight into their respective positions, and to efficiently lead a strong, successful chapter for the school year. The officers left Jekyll Island with a greater respect and knowledge of their organization, and a desire to share the information with other members during upcoming meetings.
