Valdosta Board of Education approves new principal for high school

The Valdosta Board of Education approved Gary B. Boling as the new principal of VHS on Monday, June 23. Boling comes to Valdosta from North Cobb High School. He has several years of experience in different areas of school administration, including ten years as a middle and high school principal, four years as an assistant principal, and eleven years as a Social Studies teacher and coach. Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT) Remediation
VHS will be offering Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT) Remediation courses this summer for all students who have failed one or more sections. Teachers will be available for the science and social studies subjects. Students who need to pass ELA, math or writing can also attend and utilize the computer lab for their test prep needs. (More)
Strickland a recipient of presidential scholarship
Valdosta High School’s Caroline Strickland has been awarded the President’s Scholarship by the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. Approximately 4,600 high achieving students from across the nation applied for the scholarship, and only 2 percent of the freshmen entering Georgia Tech this fall will be President’s Scholars. (More)

Newbern 2008 International Environmental Fair
Newbern held its annual International Fair May 9, 2008. The theme of the fair this year was the environment. Teams of teachers and students collaborated to transform their hallways into environmental learning museums. VMS 8th graders post an 18 point increase in writing test scores

A record number of students won a top Accelerated Reader prize this year at WGN. Twelve 2nd and 3rd grade students who had earned at least 125 reading points were treated Friday to a limousine ride, lunch and games. (More)

SL Mason's Dane Tillman has over 100 Accelerated Reader points
SL Mason has found a new meaning in the phrase “House Divided”.  Gifted Teacher, Jennie Thornton has challenged her students to accumulate 100 Accelerated Reader (AR) points this year.  Students that rise to the occasion will have the opportunity to assign Mrs. Thornton a task. (More)
VMS Student Takes Top Spelling Bee Honors

Micah Stewart, a seventh grader at Valdosta Middle School, took top honors at the 2008 District Nine Spelling Bee. Stewart qualified as the Valdosta Schools’ representative on February 7, 2008 by winning the system wide Spelling Bee. (More)

SL Mason Succeeds in Jump Rope for Heart
WE DID IT!!! The students’ goal was to perform 1 MILLION jumps to help raise awareness about heart disease and stroke. We completed 1,000,012 jumps over the course of 3 days cumulating with our 13th annual Jump Rope for Heart celebration on February 14, 2008. The school also raised over $3,000 to be donated to the American Heart Association. (More)
Perfect Attendance Pays Off!
Second grade Sallas Mahone student Jevon Clayton recently received a very nice Valentine surprise, when he was awarded a brand new bicycle! Jevon's name was drawn from a group of students who have had perfect attendance since the beginning of the school year.  (More)

JL Lomax's Family Social
On January 29, 2008 J. L. Lomax’s P.T.O. sponsored a Family Social for the faculty, students and their families from 5:00-7:00.  This was a night filled with laughter and fun.  Parents and teachers took part in games together.  Volunteers from V.H.S. P.A.M.S. Club and members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority of Valdosta State University chaperoned the students in two rooms where they watched a movie. (More)

Valdosta Middle School band members participate in All-District Band

Judges selected 40 students from Valdosta Middle School to attend last weekend’s annual Georgia Music Educators Association District 8 Middle School All-District Band held at Camden County High School in Kingsland. Of that number, 14 students made All-District Honor Band and 26 students made All-District Concert Band. (More)

W.G. Nunn Elementary hosts Donuts for Dads
As part of Parent Involvement, W.G. Nunn Elementary held Donuts for Dads on February 5, 2008. Dads, Granddads, Great-Granddads, Uncles, and Brothers were invited to listen to their children read and take an Accelerated Reader test. Over 200 family members came out from 8-11 to share a book and a donut. Thank you gentlemen (and ladies) for helping make this activity a "sweet" success! (More)
