Brian Law
Valdosta High School
counselor leads state counseling organization
On May 15, 2008,
Brian Law, Valdosta High School Counselor, took
the oath of office as president of the Georgia
School Counselors Association (GSCA) in
Milledgeville on the campus of the “Old State
Capital” and will take official office and
duties as the leader of this state organization
on July 1st. Law was elected as the
president-elect of the organization of 1500 plus
members in 2007. His tasks in preparing for his
leadership as president of the organization
included: selecting a leadership team from
across the state to represent the various facets
of school counseling, selecting a theme for
2008-2009, planning the annual conference by
soliciting speakers, presenters, and sponsors
for this event to be held in November 2008 in
Augusta, Georgia at the Augusta Riverfront
Marriott and Suites, and planning professional
development/student service leadership
opportunities for school counselors across the
state.
Law chose the theme
“GSCA: Bridging the Gap To Student
Achievement.” He stated, “Having been a
school counselor at all settings from P-12 and
thinking of the many activities that we as
school counselors do in P-12 schools across the
state, one goal occurred that each activity
greatly affects: student achievement. As
counselors we build many bridges and fill many
gaps that lead to this goal of school
improvement through student success. As school
counselors work to serve the
personal/social/emotional, academic and career
planning needs of the students of Georgia, we
greatly impact student achievement. We are a
very important member of educational
professionals that connect students to achieving
to their potential.” Law has goals of bringing
together all student service professionals to
collaborate with school counselors on how to be
better “helpers” to serve Georgia’s students,
mentoring new school counselors to the
profession, lobbying local, state and national
leaders for support of school counseling issues
and increasing the public relations and public
perception of the jobs that school counselors do
in the schools that bridge the connection to
student success.
GSCA is the
professional school counselors association of
Georgia that represents 1500 plus school
counselors serving in Georgia’s schools from
grades Pre-K to 12 as well as school counseling
students, counselor educators, graduation
coaches and other affiliate members. GSCA is an
affiliate of the American School Counseling
Association. Law will represent Georgia school
counselors at all state meetings and will lead
the organization for a year as well as attending
and representing Georgia at American School
Counselors Association (ASCA) Leadership
Development Institute in Tucson, AZ and as a
presidential delegate to ASCA in Dallas, TX.
