Almost weekly, players from every VSU sports team from basketball, football, golf, soccer, softball, volleyball, cross county, cheer, and even the Red Hots came out to the school and read with students in kindergarten, first, second, and fifth grades. This reading assistance helped students learn their sight words, and assisted other children with their reading fluency and comprehension skills. These sports stars also helped our academic all-stars by supporting them while they took their Accelerated Reader (AR) tests, and even the cheerleaders came out and cheered on the Accelerated Reader Kickoff and No Bullying Pep Rally.
The Community Partners in Education (CPIE) program’s goal is to encourage greater student achievement in school systems by developing partnerships between individual schools and area businesses, industries, civic, church and community groups. With the positive attitude and support of VSU’s student athletes, J.L. Lomax Elementary scholars are well on their way to meeting the CPIE goal!
