As one of the nation's largest need-based college scholarship programs in the country, the Horatio Alger Scholarship Programs specifically assist high school students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their young lives. While many programs are directed primarily to recognizing academic achievement or leadership potential, the Horatio Alger Association seeks students who have exhibited determination, integrity, and perseverance in overcoming adversity, as well as having critical financial need.
Moore, a Dual-Enrollment and AVID student, plans to pursue a degree in Business and Health Care Administration. Moore offered a bit of advice for future Horatio Alger scholarship applicants: “Tell your story honestly. During the application process, you should have people to support you because you may be opening up about sensitive and emotional topics.”
Upon receiving news of the scholarship, International Baccalaureate student, Williams, was both surprised and relieved. Williams stated that the scholarship will further help her achieve her career goal to become a medical doctor.
Moore and Williams are members of the Valdosta High Beta Club and SMILE (Students Mentoring in Life and Education) program.
