Many children forget what they’ve learned during the school year while on summer break. This “achievement loss” is also known as the summer slide. Keeping your kids’ engaged with reading over the summer months will help maintain their academic edge and reduce the summer slide. Children who do not read over the summer could potentially lose more than 2 months of reading achievement and unfortunately summer reading loss is cumulative.
Students can read anytime, anywhere with myON’s digital books. We encourage your child to read at least 20-30 minutes a day during summer vacation to prevent the “summer slide” and prepare them for the school year ahead!
SPECIAL Summer Reading Lists have been made so your student can begin to prepare for the upcoming year. Students are encouraged to read from their RECOMMENDED List and the TEACHER List, so they can access the content that is just right for them. During the summer, students will have a chance to take a Benchmark test on myON to adjust their individual reading bookshelf or Recommended List to ensure books are at the child’s interest and independent reading level. NOTE to Parents: Please allow your student to take their Benchmark test independently so your child’s true reading growth can be measured accurately. Benchmark scores have NO impact on contest results.
Help your child “beat” the summer slide by logging into read on myON. Should you have any questions, please contact your child’s school or the VCS T&L Department at 229-671-6061.
