Valdosta City Schools is a Google Apps for Education system. Google Apps for Education enables Valdosta City Schools to provide teachers and students with cloud-based file storage, collaboration tools, calendars, word processing and more…all free and in a safe and secure environment. Students will be issued a Google Apps username and password. As with any form of technology usage, the use of Google Apps for Education must be in accordance with Valdosta City Schools’ Cyber Safety and Acceptable Use Agreement.
Many students will use these tools in college and in the workforce. Ivy League universities and 5 million businesses use Google Apps. With GAFE accounts, students can create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations anywhere they have an internet connection. Students will be able to share to their teachers and collaborate with their peers, working together on class assignments at school or at home.
Student email accounts (grades 6-12 only) will be made available upon the completion of a parental permissions form that is a part of the Student Handbook and may also be sent home by the student’s teacher. Verification in Infinite Campus by the teacher of the permissions and Cyber-safety Curriculum requirements must be met in order to activate student email. School leadership will communicate guidelines and expectations for email use to students and their parents.
We are providing this notification to the parents of children 12 and younger so that the system can be compliant with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) The only information the school system transfers to Google in the creation of students accounts is the child’s first name, last name, and a generated password.
No personal information is collected for commercial purposes in our GAFE domain, and
Google Apps for Education services do not collect or use student data for advertising purposes or create advertising profiles. Google provides an overview of their commitment to student security and privacy at this site: https://www.google.com/edu/trust/.
Access to GAFE and the District’s technology is a privilege, not a right. Students must comply with the Valdosta City Schools’ Cyber Safety and Acceptable Use Agreement at all times in order to maintain the privilege of using its technology resources. The district maintains the right to withdraw access when there is reason to believe violations of law or district policies have occurred. The alleged violation will be referred to the principal for further investigation. Pending review, a user account may be terminated as part of such action.
Parents who object to their child using Google Apps for Education must contact their child’s principal in writing within ten (10) days of the student’s enrollment.
