Today, Valdosta City Schools says "see you later" to two valued members of our Wildcat family who have made a lasting impact on our students, staff, and community.
As Dr. Travet "Tret" Witherspoon concludes his service with Valdosta City Schools and prepares to become the next superintendent of Thomaston-Upson County Schools, we celebrate a career marked by servant leadership, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to student success.
Since joining Valdosta City Schools in 2019 as Principal of J.L. Lomax Elementary School, Dr. Witherspoon quickly distinguished himself as a leader who inspired excellence and built meaningful relationships. His success at J.L. Lomax led to his appointment as Assistant Superintendent of Operations and later Deputy Superintendent, where he played a vital role in advancing district initiatives, supporting school leaders, and helping move Valdosta City Schools forward.
Throughout his career, Dr. Witherspoon has been known for his ability to build strong teams, foster a culture of continuous improvement, and keep students at the center of every decision. His leadership helped advance the district's mission and strengthen the foundation upon which future success will continue to be built.
We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to Mrs. Contina "Tina" Witherspoon, a proud Valdosta High School Class of 1991 graduate, devoted Wildcat mom, and valued member of our Special Education Department since 2014. Through her dedication to students and families, Tina has made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless children across our district. She was instrumental in the creation, implementation, and continued success of the VCS Special Education Wildcat Field Day, an event that has become a cherished tradition celebrating the abilities, accomplishments, and spirit of our students. Her compassion, advocacy, and commitment to ensuring every child feels seen, valued, and supported embody the very best of Valdosta City Schools.
During our May District Leadership Team meeting, district and school leaders gathered to surprise the Witherspoons with a special farewell celebration in recognition of their service, leadership, and contributions to our school system. The photos shared here capture that special occasion, along with a final photo taken today on Dr. Witherspoon's last official day with Valdosta City Schools. While these images mark the end of an important chapter, they also serve as a reminder of the countless lives touched by their dedication and service to the V.
While we are saddened to see them leave the V, we could not be more excited for this next chapter. Thomaston-Upson County Schools is gaining an exceptional superintendent, and the Thomaston community will be fortunate to welcome two individuals who care deeply about students, families, and public education.
Dr. and Mrs. Witherspoon, thank you for your years of service, leadership, friendship, and unwavering dedication to Valdosta City Schools. The impact you have made on our students, staff, and community will be felt for years to come.
Though your address may change, your Wildcat roots remain strong.
Once a Wildcat, Always a Wildcat. 🐾💛🖤
Please join us in wishing Dr. Tret Witherspoon and Mrs. Tina Witherspoon continued success, happiness, and many blessings as they begin this exciting new journey.
