Valdosta City Schools is looking for students who are ready to speak up, serve their community and have a seat at the table with district leadership.
Applications for Superintendent Dr. Craig D. Lockhart’s 2026–2027 Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council will open Monday, August 24, for Valdosta City Schools students in grades 8–12.
This year, the district is expanding and strengthening the Council to provide students with greater opportunities to have a voice in the conversations, decisions and initiatives that affect their educational experience.
Council members will meet directly with Lockhart and other district leaders throughout the school year to discuss issues affecting students, provide feedback on district initiatives, share ideas and help identify opportunities to strengthen the student experience across Valdosta City Schools.
“One of the most valuable perspectives we have as district leaders comes directly from our students,” Lockhart said. “I want this Council to be a place where students know they can speak openly and honestly about what is working, what is challenging them and what we can do better. We are looking for students who are willing to listen to one another, think critically and help us find solutions that will make Valdosta City Schools stronger.”
Council members will also have opportunities to take their involvement beyond regular meetings. Plans for the 2026–2027 school year include participating in a community service project in November, assisting with the grand opening of the new VCS District Office and traveling to Atlanta to visit the Georgia State Capitol during the legislative session.
“These experiences are another way for our students to see leadership and service in action,” Lockhart said. “I want them to understand that their role on this Council extends beyond sharing their opinions with me. They will have opportunities to serve their community, represent Valdosta City Schools and see firsthand how decisions affecting public education are made.”
For the first time, the application process is open to VCS students in grades 8–12. A limited number of students will be selected, with the district seeking representation from different schools, grade levels, experiences and perspectives.
Students do not have to be class officers, club presidents or traditional student leaders to apply.
“We don't only want to hear from the students who are already comfortable standing in front of a room,” Lockhart said. “We want students with different experiences and different points of view. If you have something meaningful to contribute and you care about making your school and your district better, we want to hear from you.”
The application includes three short-response questions designed to help students share their experiences, ideas and perspectives. No letters of recommendation are required.
Applications will be accepted from Monday, August 31 through Friday, September 30, 2026.

Selected students will be notified following the application review process. The Council’s first meeting is expected to be held in mid-November.
