Valdosta High School has been named a 2026 Distinguished Breakout High School by the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals (GASSP), recognizing the school’s commitment to academic achievement, student success, and creating meaningful opportunities for all scholars.

The GASSP Breakout Schools Award recognizes schools for exemplary practices in three core areas:

  • Collaborative Leadership — Professional learning communities, shared leadership, and the development of

    student and staff leaders.

  • Personalization — Attention to the needs of all students through mentoring, student well-being initiatives, and

    strong school and community connections.

  • Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment — Access to rigorous coursework for all students, differentiated

instruction, multiple forms of assessment, data-based decision-making, and opportunities for college and

    career development.

Dr. Johnnie Marshall, Principal of Valdosta High School, accepted the award and a $500 check on behalf of the school during the 2026 Georgia Principals Conference in Athens, Georgia.

“This award is a direct reflection of the hard work of our teachers and staff, who collectively work to challenge and support our scholars,” said Dr. Marshall. “We are proud of our scholars for taking advantage of the many opportunities available to them to create pathways of success for their futures. This recognition also reflects the tremendous support of our Valdosta community. Our community stakeholders strengthen our school in countless ways—from academic partnerships and dual enrollment opportunities to wraparound services that support the social and emotional well-being of our students. The success of Valdosta High School truly represents the collective commitment of the entire Wildcat community.”

Valdosta City Schools Superintendent Dr. Craig Lockhart stated, “I am extremely proud of Dr. Marshall and the VHS Community. The faculty, staff, and students work very hard across the areas of academics and extracurriculars, and this recognition is a reflection of their efforts. I congratulate Valdosta High School for being honored by GASSP. GO CATS!!!”

As a Distinguished Breakout High School, Valdosta High School will have the opportunity to share its successful practices with educational leaders from across Georgia in Spring 2027.

This recognition celebrates the collective efforts of Valdosta High School’s scholars, faculty, staff, families, community partners, and district leadership.
