Valdosta City Schools proudly welcomed members of the 2026–2027 Superintendent's Student Advisory Council for their first meeting on Friday, November 6, 2026, at the new Valdosta Board of Education.
Led by Superintendent Dr. Craig Lockhart, the Council provides students with opportunities to share their perspectives, develop leadership skills and have a direct voice in conversations that help shape the future of Valdosta City Schools.
This year's Council includes 31 students representing five schools and programs across the district. In addition to students from Valdosta High School and Valdosta Early College Academy, the Council has expanded this year to include eighth-grade students from J.L. Newbern Middle School and Valdosta Middle School, as well as representation from Valdosta Virtual Academy.
The expanded representation reflects the district's commitment to ensuring students from different grade levels, schools and learning environments have a voice in district conversations.
A Morning of Leadership, Collaboration and Student Voice
The morning began with introductions and activities designed to help Council members get to know one another and build connections across schools.
Students explored the district's 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, discussing the important role they play in supporting its goals and helping move Valdosta City Schools forward.
Council members also toured the new Valdosta Board of Education, gaining a firsthand look at the district's new administrative home and learning more about the work taking place to support students, employees and schools.
Another highlight of the meeting was a discussion of the Council's Capstone Project, which will provide opportunities for students to collaborate, explore needs and identify ways to make a meaningful difference in their schools or community.
The meeting also featured engaging "Keep It! Fix It! Dream It!" conversations, encouraging students to consider three important questions:
Keep It! What is Valdosta City Schools doing well that we should continue?
Fix It! What could we improve to make the student experience even better?
Dream It! If there were no limitations, what would you love to see happen in our schools?
These conversations provided an opportunity for students to share their experiences, offer suggestions and begin identifying priorities for the year ahead.
